When rain confined Camille Pissarro to the indoors, he sometimes painted lush bouquets of flowers gathered by his wife, who grew masses of them in her garden. Her pink peonies were her great pride; the large blossoms anchoring this bouquet may be examples of such blooms. The green leaves strewn to the left of the vase and the pink petal fallen at its base imbue the composition with a sense of spontaneity.
